Violet Lemay was a stage designer, an art professor, and an editorial illustrator before arriving at her dream job: writing and illustrating books for kids.

Violet has illustrated forty books, six of which she also wrote. She has worked with many publishers, including HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Scholastic, duopress, 'Magination Press, and Free Spirit Publishing. As an editorial illustrator, Violet contributed art to hundreds of magazines and newspapers. She continues to work with several children's magazines, most notably Highlights High Five, for whom she illustrated Ana Gálan's long-running bilingual "Doña Rosa" series, four-page stories about a pink flamingo and her friends and family.

Violet's illustrations have won awards and recognition from American Illustration annuals and Society of Illustrators Los Angeles. In 2018, her original acrylic paintings, pencil sketches, and book dummy from 100 Pablo Picassos were featured as part of a large exhibit at the Museum of Children's Art and Books in Soeul, Korea, where two of her paintings are now a part of the permanent collection. Parents Magazine featured TummyTime: Happy Baby as #4 in their "20 First Baby Books You'll Both Love" in 2019. In 2020, the Chicago Public Library included Library Babies as one of their best books, and School Library Journal included Babies Around the World in their "50 Children's Books that Celebrate Diversity".

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Violet and her family accidentally became globe hoppers when they moved to New Zealand for her husband's job. From there they moved to China, and then to Malaysia, where Violet and her husband are now residents at an American international boarding school. If she’s not at her desk writing or drawing, she’s probably at the library, reading.

Violet's latest book Let's Be Friends, which she wrote and illustrated, will be released by HarperCollins in December.
